Lab assistant Duties
Login to the lab assistant machine at the beginning of your shift, remain logged in during your shift, and logout at the end of your shift. We use this login information to check against your time sheet at the end of the month.
Workstations- Move the mouse and make sure the login prompt is on the screen. Reboot the computers if necessary. Troubleshoot the problem, if you feel comfortable doing so. After you determine it can not be fixed by you, put a down sign on the unit. During the day, between the hours of 8AM to 5PM M-Fri, please call me at x7946. After 5PM or weekends, please email me at cgolance@adams.edu. In the email (or voicemail) please tell me who you are, which lab you are in, and a description the problem.
Printers- At the beginning, and end of your shift, check the paper in the printer(s). Look at the LCD display on the printers and change the toner cartridge when the printer indicates it is out. If you do not know how to change the toner, check with me. Replacement paper and toner are kept in the cabinets in the lab. When you replace a toner cartridge, bring the old one to Computing Services (from 8AM-5PM M-Fri) otherwise leave it in the cabinet and email me that you replaced it. Toner cartridges are recycled.
If the student is doing anything more than picking up a printout, ask them if you can assist them. There should not be any manual feeding of paper etc. Most printing problems are related to users changing the printer settings, or the lab assistant improperly filling the paper. The printers have a maximum level line on the paper tray; do not fill it above this line or it will jam. Remember to fill the paper clip holders and staplers. The College Center and ES have locks on them; ask me for the combination.
Check your campus email regularly- The majority of our communication will be through email. Please check it regularly, and respond to my emails in a timely manner.
Answer questions from users- Any questions you are unable to answer, ask the customer how they want to be contacted, and pass that information on to me. You may give them my email address and or phone number. My work hours are 8AM-5PM Monday through Friday.
Keeping the Lab Clean- Pick up the trash, push in the chairs etc. Clean and dust in and around the computers and monitors as needed. Cleaning supplies are in the cabinet.
Academics take precedence over games etc. - If the lab is full and people are waiting, you may ask people downloading music or playing games to give up the machines.
Abuse of equipment- If you notice any users causing abuse to computer lab equipment contact me 8-5 or call public safety at x7901.
Work Schedule- If for some reason you can not come in to work, you must notify me. Call me between 8AM-5PM, email after 5PM or on weekends. If you miss work and do not notify me, I will ask you to get work-study somewhere else.
Time sheets- Turn in your time sheets on the last working day of the month. Drop the off in Computing Services, in my box up front. Please make sure to sign and date them. View a flash video on how to fill out the time sheet, click here.
Telephone usage; keep personal calls to the minimum.
Food or Drinks are not allowed at the computers in labs.
