Lab Howto's

How to scan using a PC computer located in any lab serviced by Computing Services.

To start, you want or need to scan a document for personal use or for a presentation, and you have to decide what program you want to use to scan your document with. The scanners that we use are all ran with HP Precisionscan Pro. Hopefully, you already know the Windows XP environment or you know something about the Windows XP environment. When you’re ready to start, login to a machine and get to a point that is similar to this:

PC Desktop

When you look at the right side of the desktop you should see a group of icons which are the icons for: Scan an Image, OnmiPage Pro 12.0(OCR), Dreamweaver MX 2004, Fireworks MX 2004, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, Adobe GoLive CS (ENG), Adobe Illustrator CS, Adobe ImageReady CS, Adobe InDesign CS, Adobe Photoshop CS and Burn CDs but you won’t need this one application to scan. The Icons should be arranged in this way show at the bottom of this section. With this documentation assumes that you have some basic knowledge with these applications and will just focus on how to scan into or from the most commonly used applications.

Icons on Desktop

The primary scanning application is HP Precisionscan Pro. From this application, you can scan an image, scan it to another application, save it, and print it. To get started with HP Precisionscan Pro, you need to locate the icon that says “Scan an Image” and click on it. When you have clicked on that icon you should get a screen that looks like this but a little bigger:

Scanning an Image Using HP Precisionscan Pro

When the HP Precisionscan Pro window comes up, you have manually have to start the scan by pressing the button, listed as number one in the Guided Steps on the HP Precisionscan Pro window.

When you press the “Start a new scan” button it will look something like this:

After you manually start the scanning process what you scan will appear in the window next to the Guided Steps window. It should look something like this:

When you have the HP Precisionscan Pro screen look like the one above then you have some selections you can make. You could just select one area to scan if that is the only area you want to be scanned, or you can select one of the opinions that are listed in number five of Guided Steps in the image above. If you pick the opinion “Scan to…” you get a few opinions like: Acrobat Exchange 4.0 or 5.0, Adobe ImageReady CS, HP Share-to-Web, Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, OmniPage Pro, Paint or WordPad. But if you want to use the other applications on the desktop like: Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, Adobe ImageReady CS, and Adobe Photoshop CS, you will have to import them from the applications. Like Dreamweaver MX 2004, Fireworks MX 2004, Adobe GoLive CS, Adobe Illustrator CS and Adobe InDesign CS, you will have to scan the image and save the scanned image and open in these applications.

With scanning an image to Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, first open the application by clicking on the desktop icon. After Acrobat is opened go to “File”, then go to “Create PDF”, then next go to “From Scanner…”

Importing into Adobe Acrobat

When you have selected “From Scanner…” you will get a screen that’s will say “Create PDF From Scanner”, when that screen comes up HP Precisionscan Pro 3.1 should be listed as the device. Now all you have to do is click on the button that says “Scan”

After you have selected the Scan button, the scanner will automatically scan your document or picture. When the Scan is done you should have a screen that looks something like this, you might have to fix the color by going to the number two opinion that says “Confirm that the output type is what you want:” After you fix the color or you like it the way it is, then all you have to do is click on the arrow on option number 4, and it will take you back to Acrobat. Before you click on the arrow to take you back to Acrobat, you will have to make a selected area on the scanned document that you want scanned. When you have selected the area that you want, then you can click on the arrow to take you back to Acrobat..

When the image is finished being scanned it will take you back to Acrobat and you will be able to view it in Acrobat.

To import an image to Adobe ImageReady CS, first you need to open the application by click on the Adobe ImageReady CS. When the Application is opened go to “File”, then go to “Import”, then next go to “Twain Acquire…”

Importing to ImageReady

When the Scan is done you should have a screen that looks something like this, you might have to fix the color, to do this you go to the number two opinion that says “Confirm that the output type is what you want:” After you fix the color or you like it the way it is, then all you have to do is click on the arrow on option number 4, and it will take you back to ImageReady. Before you click on the arrow to take you back to ImageReady, you will have to make a selected area on the scanned document that you want scanned. When you have selected the area you want scanned, then you can go ahead and click on the arrow to take you back to ImageReady.
